- Boy, Are You Dumb... The following opinion piece was sent as a press release on June 4, 2001, from the offices of Sen. Harold Hochstatter (R – Moses Lake) and Sen. Val Stevens (R – Arlington). Although the specific supporting statistics cited are somewhat dated, the problem they illustrate has not been solved. The WASL is still biased against boys.
- WASL Quagmire Continues Read CURE's response to the Washington State Institute for Public Policy (WSIPP). The 2006 Legislature directed the WSIPP, under Senate Bill 6618, to "conduct a study to explore options to augment the current system of assessments..." The bill directed the Institute to consult with a broad range of groups, and CURE was among the participating groups.
- Why the WASL is so AWFUL! A Must Read! This is the 2006 update (viewer friendly version) to our previous brochure. If you would like a brochure-formatted version, please contact us at cure@curewashington.org. Correction: On the first batch of printed brochures, under issue #9, there was a typographical error in a statistic and corresponding error in the graph. The 2003-04 ITED percentile score should have been 38.9 instead of 28.9. We apologize for the error and have corrected it for this website version.
- Testing terms: Enter the mysterious land of "assessment and testing", and it seems to be a foreign language. Navigate, with us, through the confusing language and you will understand what "they" really mean.

READING -- Click on Washington State. "The 2004 standards are also much less rigorous than in the previous document. Some grade-level expectations are clear and specific and can be used for assessments, but a large number are processes, strategies, or pretentious statements with no clear academic objective-reductionist in goal and often incomprehensible."
MATHEMATICS -- Scroll down to "Washington" on page 113 of the report. The computer may show this as page 78 of 85 in the PDF. "A good first step toward improving Washington ’s failed standards would be to eliminate all but the first of the five strands identified in the grade-level expectations. The other four express laudable but inherently vague goals, and the specific standards listed under them are often of such low quality that they are likely to create more confusion and frustration than enlightenment."
